Did you know that Los Angeles County throws away

enough trash in one day to fill Dodger Stadium?

LITTERLESS LUNCHES EVERYDAY AT VALLEY STARTING  MONDAY, JANUARY 26th.

What are Litterless Lunches?

It’s very simple.  We want to bring lunches that don’t generate any trash.

How do we do it?

Get a Go Green Trash- Free Lunchbox

Or to make your own trash-free lunch.......

·        Use a thermos or reusable water bottle instead of juice boxes or disposable water bottles

·        Use Tupperware for things like raisins, chips, pretzels, yogurt and crackers. In addition,  Japanese supermarkets carry a selection of reusable and cute containers that work well for lunches and snacks.

·        Pack a cloth napkin and use silverware that can be washed and reused

****Please ask your kids to bring home any uneaten items (ie, unpeeled bananas, leftover pretzels).  They can make an easy afternoon snack

Why Should we do it ?

·      Reduce our trash.  The average student creates 67 lbs of lunch trash waste per school year.  This means Hermosa schools create over 70,000 lbs of trash a year during lunch alone.

·      Save our schools money!!!  Creating less trash in our lunches can help reduce our schools waste disposal costs.  Through implementing a trash reduction program, Downey School District reduced its trash disposal costs by 50% saving $50,000 annually.

·      Make our schools healthier.  By composting our trash, we create natural fertilizer that we can use on our schools’ green space.

·      Save yourself money.  By not using Ziploc bags and single serve lunch items you save on average $300 annually per student.
